What Are Millennials Looking For When Buying Homes?

Millennials are often characterized as the generation that expects it all without putting in the hard work and effort. Often misunderstood, millennials are no lazier than any other previous generation; they just know how to get what they want, when they want it, thanks to the technological tools and support at their fingertips.

House hunting is no different. Millennials are the most particular buyers in the market today, and since they are the biggest section of the market, their home buying preferences are shaping what is desired and considered valuable by buyer’s standards.

Many of the below items are going to seem obvious when thinking about a millennial buyer. Here are there top 5 demands when touring a house:

1. Backyard: Millennials are a health conscious, environmentally conscious, and socially conscious generation. They want fresh air and space for their dogs to roam. They don’t believe in animal currently, which means ample, natural space for their pets is paramount.

2. Beautiful Kitchen: The kitchen is the most important part of the house, according to millennial buyers. The kitchen now doubles as the cooking and dining room, being the place that millennials spend most of their time. Therefore, they’re looking for a gorgeous kitchen.

3. Open Space: Millennials value things like natural light today. They aren’t looking for cramped corners; they want a home that looks open and lit up, perfect for social media content.

4. Low Maintenance: Millennials don’t have a lot of money. Therefore, they want homes that don’t look like high, expensive maintenance. New appliances and hardwood floors are at the top of the list.

5. Technology: Millennials are the most technologically savvy generation in the world right now. They grew up with technology and rely on it. That means they are looking for smart homes that have taken a step to integrate responsive technology and robotic support for the future. Additionally, a home’s appeal can diminish greatly if the cell or WiFi reception is terrible. Millennials need to be connected to the Internet at all times throughout the day.

Millennials are bringing in a new era of buying standards that are both typical and surprising for the generation. When you realize this is a group of adults that grew up with technology, during the Great Recession, and went to a college that cost $60,000 per year, it makes it easier to start understanding what they want and values in a new home today.

A few ways to make your home sales ready could be kitchen renovations, building a fence around the backyard, improving your WiFi connectivity, and updating any old fixtures in the house.
